While the benefits of joining a Mom’s Group have long been acknowledged, due to newborns’ immature immune systems, it is understandable that many parents have concerns about potentially exposing their babies to viruses or bacteria. For that reason, San Diego Mommy and Me uses a layered approach of policies and procedures that have been proven effective at greatly reducing the probability of exposure/transmission. With these safety measures in place, SDMM groups are an excellent way to get out of the house very early on without increased concern.

For additional support on how to navigate COVID as a parent, HERE is a helpful guide the CDC released geared towards families with unvaccinated little ones.

In purchasing a Mommy and Me group series, participants agree to comply with the following health and cleanliness policies and practices.

SD Mommy and Me – “Layers of protection

To better understand the rationale behind these policies and procedures, it’s important to view them as they relate to the 4 main pathways of transmission or exposure:

  1. Direct contact (physically touching an infected individual) – Addressed by: No Sick Policy, Facility cleaning and ventilation, and optional physical contact based on personal preference.
  2. Indirect contact (touching an infected object) – Addressed by: No Sick Policy, Facility cleaning and ventilation, and optional physical contact based on personal preference.
  3. Droplets (directly through the air from one infected respiratory tract to another via large respiratory droplets) – Addressed by: “No Sick” Policy, Ventilation Procedures, Masking*, and optional physical distancing based on personal preference.
  4. Aerosol (Build-up of fine respiratory aerosols) – Addressed by: “No Sick” Policy and Ventilation Procedures.

“No sick policy”

Greatly reducing the probability of direct, indirect, droplet, and arousal spread, participants agree not to attend class if they or their little have exhibited or developed any of the following symptoms within the last 48 hours:

  • Fever 100.4⁰F / 38°C or higher*
  • Cough
  • Shortness of Breath or Difficulty Breathing*
  • Chills*
  • Fatigue*
  • Muscle Pain or Body Aches*
  • New Loss of Taste or Smell
  • Sore Throat*
  • Congestion or Runny nose
  • Nausea, Vomiting, or Diarrhea*
  • Other signs of new illness that are unrelated to a preexisting condition (such as seasonal allergies)*

*Signs body is actively fighting a virus

FAQs

When can I return to the group? Following a negative COVID-19 test, participants are permitted to attend class once active virus symptoms have improved and they have been fever-free (without medication) for at least 72 hours. Participants with a lingering cough or congestion are required to wear a mask indoors.

Can I attend group without my little one? Absolutely! If you have available care for your little one, you are absolutely allowed and encouraged to attend group alone.

COVID-specific  protections

Participants agree not to attend the group if either of the following occur:

  • Close contact with anyone with confirmed COVID-19 within the past 5 days. Close contact means being within 6 feet (2 meters) of an infected person for 15 minutes or more.
  • A positive COVID-19 test indicates an active virus within the past 10 days.

Testing: Following CDC recommends, participants are asked to self-test if they are exposed to COVID-19 or have symptoms of COVID-19.

Masks: With current high levels of vaccination and high levels of population immunity from both vaccination and infections, the risk of medically significant disease, hospitalization, and death from COVID-19 is greatly reduced for most people. For that reason, in-door use of masks is no longer mandated by California or San Diego Public Health guidelines.

Currently, the CDC continues to universally recommend in-door masking when levels of COVID-19 transmission are high, and on an individual level (if a participant has a household or social contract with someone who is considered high risk for severe disease) when community transmission is moderate.

Knowing the COVID-19 Community Level can help Participants make decisions based on their local context and their unique needs.

That said, although not mandated, the American Academy of Pediatrics, local, and state guidelines continue to promote a blanket policy that Strongly Recommends in-door masking in childcare settings.

Official Mask Policy-

San Diego Mommy and Me groups will continue to follow local, state, and federal guidelines as it relates to masking. Meaning, masks are currently strongly recommended but optional* when San Diego has low to moderate community transmission. If policy recommends change or San Diego returns to high community transmission, masking will be required of all adult participants.

Please note: Participants will be supported in their decision to wear or not to wear a mask and agree to treat each other with civility and respect.

*Participants with lingering cold symptoms, a positive test within 10 days, or potential exposure to someone with COVID-19 are required to wear a mask while indoors (NOTE: known exposure and a current positive test are required to isolate at home).

Cohorts:

San Diego Mommy and Me is a “closed group” or in public health terms, a “stable cohort.” Meaning, participants end with who they start with. Each group cohort is limited to 12 participants. This formate greatly benefits the group experience AND contributes to the reduction of probable exposure by limiting participants’ exposure to a constant and small number of individuals.

Ventilation:

To greatly reduce the probability of aerosol build-up/transmission via unknowingly asymptomatic individuals, the group facility is equipped with an HVAC filtration system of 0.3 -1 micron. Per recommendations, the systems fan will be on for the entirety of the group. For additional peace of mind and protection, the room will also be using two additional freestanding HEPA Air Purifier with a Clean Air Delivery Rate (CADR) guaranteed to rid the air (in a room our size) of 99.9% of airborne pathogens 5x every hour, plus 6 portable HEPA purifier places in the center of the group. This is ventilation over-kill, but an easy way to prevent aerosol build-up/transmission and bring peace of mind to all group members.

Vaccinations:

San Diego Mommy and Me is unable to collect or verify immunization records (PHI), San Diego Mommy and Me asks that all participants are up to date on all recommended vaccinations. The continued promotion of vaccinations is in service of protecting infants by reducing their environmental exposure to a wide variety of preventable viruses. Group Facilitators are up to date on all recommended vaccinations. Recommended vaccinations centered around infant protection: Influenza (yearly), Tdap, MMR, VAR, and COVID-19.

Cleanliness:

Facility and materials are used only used for Mommy & Me classes and kept extremely clean with very limited exposure to anything. To help reduce the probability of exposing little one’s to environmental bacteria, participants agree to a shoe-free environment (adults wear clean socks) and all high touch areas or used toys are disinfected in between each use. Hand sanitizer, disinfectant wipes, and the ability to wash hands are available to participants as desired. Lastly, participants are asked to bring a blanket to lay baby as an additional safeguard for the infant and the room carpet.

Physical Contact or Proximity:

The amount of physical or close contact participants have is completely dependent on their comfort zone. Typically, participants are spaced about an arm’s length apart; however, participants are welcome to spread out even further if additional space is desired.

Non-Movers

  • Little-littles are mostly held by mom, sleeping in their car seats/carriers, or lying on their own blanket resulting in limited to no contact with one another.

Movers

  • Participants are asked to prevent movers from crawling on or hovering near/over outer-circle sedentary infants.
  • If participants would prefer to keep their mover contained out of ease or concern, they are welcome to bring anything that may help. THIS little contraption is highly recommended.
  • Group toys will be available in the center of the circle for any littles desiring additional entertainment. These toys will be disinfected after each use.
